The Ultimate LinkedIn Profile Optimization Checklist

How to rewrite your headline, about summary, and settings to capture active recruitment searches.

LinkedIn is more than a social network—it acts as a database that recruiters query to find candidates before posting an open role. If your profile is not formatted for their search algorithm, you are missing out on inbound opportunities.

1. Write a search-friendly headline

Your headline shouldn't just state your current job title (e.g. "Software Engineer at Google"). While accurate, it lacks secondary search terms. Instead, write a headline combining your core title, key technical skills, and achievements.

Example: Product Marketing Manager | B2B SaaS GTM Lead | Grew Pipeline by 28% at Northline

2. Craft your About summary

The first three lines of your About section are crucial—they show up "above the fold" before a user clicks "See more". Use this space to write a hook that explains what you do, who you help, and your primary competencies.

Follow the hook with a bulleted list of core competencies and software skills. This aggregates terms for indexing without making your summary unreadable to humans.

3. Align and pin your Skills section

You can add up to 50 skills to your profile. Recruiters filter directly by these competencies. Make sure your top three skills—which are visible directly on your main profile card—match the requirements of the roles you are targeting.

4. Configure your visibility settings

Ensure your "Open to Work" setting is configured properly. If currently employed, limit visibility to "Recruiters Only" to hide the public green banner while informing recruiters using the specialized Recruiter dashboard that you are available.
